An animation exercise for my ANIM 323 [3D Character Animation: Expressive Character Acting] class at SCAD. Badminton has been a favorite sport of mine and my dad's. He taught me how to play ever since I was a little kid, and I really wanted to animate some of his moves. However, due to the pandemic, we weren't able to go play badminton and shoot references, so I had to use my second badminton hero: the badminton legend himself, Lee Chong Wei!
Here's a quick progression reel:
Getting Lee's amazing footwork is the key here. I tried to do justice to hit all his poses! But you can see that I took some liberty to add camera movements and cuts to the character's facial expression just to sprinkle a little bit of spice into this shot. I also added the celebratory pose at the end to bring everything to a victory-feel ending. The following is a more in-depth breakdown as well as my annotation sketches of the reference video. I definitely feel that there is room for improvement, such as making the whole energy snappier. But I've tried my best and it was really fun to experiment with smears and the stretched birdie!
